Hotel Thermostats
What makes a hotel thermostat different
A hotel thermostat does more than hold a room temperature. In a guest room it manages heating and cooling across the equipment hotels actually use — fan coil units, heat pumps, and packaged terminal air conditioners — and it often serves as the local brain of the room's energy management. It has to stay simple for guests while giving property engineering teams the control and diagnostics they need.
These are the guest-room thermostat families Howe Sound supports. All are current, supported INNCOM platforms.
Wired guest-room thermostats
- INNCOM E528 — a wired DDC thermostat with five built-in relays, capable of directly controlling fan coils and PTACs across common hotel voltages. It's an established platform, still produced, with a large installed base. E528 troubleshooting
- INNCOM e7 — the newer, current-generation member of the INNCOM smart-thermostat line, with an on-board motion sensor and a mounting setup built around a Smart Wall Mounting Plate. e7 field guide
- INNCOM E527 — a low-profile wired thermostat designed for a British single-gang box (with an optional plate for American double-gang). It has no local relays, so it is always paired with an INNCOM relay controller.
Wireless and battery-powered thermostats
- INNCOM e7-W — battery-powered and wireless, built around a DDC processor; suited to retrofits where wiring is difficult.
- INNCOM E529 — a battery-powered RF thermostat. The current E529 is fully compatible with older INNCOM systems and is a valid retrofit option — especially where an existing property's thermostat wiring doesn't have enough conductors for a wired install. It uses a separate relay/controller pack and an RF transceiver to switch the HVAC unit.
Designer and room-control interfaces
- INNCOM MODEVA — a glass touch panel. MODEVA is best understood as a room-control / thermostat interface rather than a standalone thermostat: it has no on-board temperature probe (a wired or wireless room probe is required) and needs separate relay/control components to drive the HVAC unit.
Energy management built in
Several of these thermostats can be equipped with built-in energy-management features — a light sensor, a passive infrared (PIR) motion detector, and the ecoMODE green button. In INNCOM's guidance, these built-ins can deliver some savings on their own, but the strongest setup combines motion detection with an entry-door switch; monitoring an open window or balcony increases savings further.
INNCOM documents that a networked EMS integrated with the property management system can reduce guestroom HVAC energy usage by 25–40%, based on HVAC runtime reduction versus a traditional (ETM) thermostat mode, in hotels with average occupancy and under 500 rooms. Actual results depend on the property, configuration, and occupancy.
Choosing among INNCOM thermostats
- New construction: wired thermostats are the preferred approach.
- Retrofit: wired thermostats are also commonly used where the existing wiring has enough conductors and is suitable. Wireless / battery options (E529, e7-W) come into play where the available conductors aren't sufficient or pulling additional wiring is impractical.
- Designer interface: MODEVA (with external sensing and relay/control components).
Running the E528 today doesn't oblige you to change platforms; the e7 is simply an option for current and new projects.
